25 Tools Every User Should Have

  1. CCleaner.  Stands for CrapCleaner and does what it promises.  Cleans out the crap that your don't need.

  2. File Scavenger.  If your hard drive has died and if you need the data, try this.

  3. WinDirStat.  Graphical display of all your files.

  4. File Shredder.  Shred your data.

  5. Diskeeper / Perfect Disk.  Both very good disk defragmenters.

  6. ZoneAlarm.  Possibly the best software firewall out there.

  7. A-Squared.  Trojan scanner.

  8. AVG Free Edition.  Free anti-virus.

  9. Blacklight.  Get rid of those nasty rootkits.

  10. HijackThis.  When A-Squared and Blacklight can't get rid of the nasties.  Beats a reinstall.

  11. Windows Defender.  Microsoft's anti-spyware app.

  12. Belarc Advisor.  Free utility to scan your system of components/hardware.  Also will do a security scan.

  13. Speed Fan.  Control the fan speeds in your system.

  14. Unlocker.  Ever have a file you couldn't delete because "it was in use"?  Try this.

  15. Drive Key Boot Utility.  Have an old USB thumb drive?  Use this on it and throw away your floppy drive.

  16. ExplorerXP.  ExplorerXP does everything Windows Explorer does, plus a whole lot more!

  17. TrueCrypt.  Encrypt personal data.

  18. Notebook Hardware Control.  Useful for us notebook users; control your fans!

  19. nLite.  Useful XP-installation app.

  20. BartPE.  The ultimate boot-disk!

  21. SpamPal.  Get rid of spam.

  22. UDPixel.  Check for dead/stuck pixels on your LCD.

  23. SyncBackSE.  Backup to a network or FTP site.
